Gender and Disaster
There is a new website which has a wealth of resources on Gender and Disaster
- Gender and Disaster Taskforce (Chaired by Craig Lapsley, Emergency Management Commissioner and Susie Reid, CEO WHGNE)
- Gender and Disaster snapshots
In January, the first Australian 'Gender and Disaster Taskforce' was established. It is Co-Chaired by the Emergency Managment Commissioner, Craig Lapsley and the Executive Officer of WHGNE, Susie Reid, and has representatives from Women's Health In the North and all major Victorian ESOs, the community, government and academic sectors. The taskforce has the purpose of 'providing statewide strategic direction and leadership to reduce the compounding effects of gender on disaster impacts' and has seven specific objectives.
This work is bringing a gender-focus to disaster policy, planning, training and practice, in order to improve the support that men and women recieve before and after disaster, mitigate risks to men and women's health and wellbeing post-disaster, and build awareness of the critical need for attention to gender in disaster planning and community recovery.
